As per our plan, we, a group of cousins, gathered at KSRTC Bus Stand Platform No. 17, Majestic, at 4:00 PM on March 29, 2013. Despite being relatives, the irony was that we didn't know each other well, except for a couple of familiar faces. Introductions were in order, and soon, our group comprised Satya, Mythrai, Devika, Jo (Jyothi), Swathi, Ashwin (my friend), Pramodh Kashyap, and Chaithra. We awaited Amar Anna's arrival until 5:15 PM before setting off to Hassan around 5:30 PM. The bus journey was a delightful one, filled with discussions ranging from science and "Man vs. Wild" to lectures and jokes, all under the guidance of Amar Anna.
By 9:30 PM, we reached Hassan and walked approximately 2 km to Satya's house from the bus stand. Satya's abode was a beautifully built house, and the hospitality was commendable. Post settling in, we decided to cook our food. The girls took charge of preparing chapatis, which turned out to be excellent. The night concluded around midnight, with the arrival of Adithya Anna. Special thanks to Swathi for arranging a bed for me and Ashwin.
The next morning, at 4:00 AM, we geared up for the trek as the TT (Tempo Traveler) was scheduled to arrive at 5:30 AM. Bathed and ready, we shared some light moments of fun and banter. Two of Satya's friends, Kiran and Uday, joined our group.
The trek commenced with an aim to reach the peak by 5:00 PM. Guided by Amar Anna, every moment of the trek was exhilarating and enjoyable. However, the experienced trekkers were right – it was challenging, particularly the slopes and rock climbing segments, compounded by the weighty backpacks. The lack of water sources from the base to KP peak added to the difficulty. Despite the hardships, we managed to reach KP peak by 5:30 PM, with the group's collective support.
Upon reaching the peak, fatigue set in, and we realized the value of water as we had run out. However, Amar Anna, Satya, and I took the initiative to pitch the tent while sending Ashwin and Kiran Anna to search for water. To our relief, our group found a water source about 1.5 km from KP peak towards Kukke Subramanya – a significant achievement. The sight of the setting sun was breathtaking, with clouds seemingly kissing us. Subsequently, finding fuel wood became a challenge, but with teamwork, we managed to gather enough to cook Maggi.
As night fell, we cooked food, battled harsh winds, and created a makeshift wall with Pramodh's bed sheet. Despite the cold, five boys huddled in one tent, while Satya, Adi Anna, and I slept outside, aided by my trusty Sleeping Bag.
The following morning, we woke early to prepare for the trek back. Another campfire was kindled using Pramodh's torn pants. Watching the sunrise, we packed up and started our trek to Kukke Subramanya around 8:00 AM. A breakfast of Maggi, buns, and a unique cocktail prepared by me provided the much-needed energy.
The trek's highlight was reaching Shesha Giri peak, capturing memorable moments with snapshots. An unexpected prank by Amar Anna added a touch of humor to the journey. The trek continued, with a halt at Bheema's rock where jokes and laughter echoed. Unfortunately, Pramodh suffered a leg injury, prompting Amar Anna, Adi Anna, and him to stay back while the rest proceeded.
Reaching Bhattara Mane, we enjoyed Neer Majjige, sympathizing with the tired trio who had carried heavy luggage. As the trek resumed at 3:00 PM, heightened vigilance was maintained due to the possibility of encountering elephants. The group walked silently, resting at various points.
Upon reaching the base by 6:30 PM, a group photo was taken. At 7:00 PM, we booked rooms in a lodge, headed for a bath, and then visited the Kukke Subramanya temple. The divine experience inside the temple, with a procession featuring an elephant, was unforgettable.
Afterward, a bittersweet farewell was bid as some of us had pre-booked tickets for the 9:30 PM express bus to Bangalore. It was a challenging moment, saying goodbye to the friends we had made during this incredible trek. Every moment spent together was cherished, and as I boarded the bus, I couldn't help but feel a sense of longing. The memories of this trek will be etched in my heart forever.
In the end, I can only express gratitude and hope to meet everyone again soon. This trek was truly the best I've ever experienced, leaving an indelible mark on my soul.
